Getting ready with Writer's Help

1. Order the Writer’s Help eBook
You will need to purchase access to Writer's Help, an online resource from Bedford/St. Martin. You can purchase your access code (remember, this is an ONLINE book, so don't purchase the print copy) directly from Bedford/St. Martin, or you can also order the access from the UIUC Bookstore.
When you login the first time, you need to Enter your first name, your last name, your e-mail address, and your instructor’s e-mail address in the text fields. For ESL 501N, the instructor email address is: feichen.wen@gmail.com (Entering your instructor’s e-mail address allows you to view any tags, notes, or new content your instructor adds for your class. It also allows us to grade and give you credit for assigned activities.) Create a password and password hint.
Click on the “Next” button and confirm your account information. You are now registered. When you visit Writer’s Help in the future, you can log in with your e-mail address and password; you will not need the activation code again.

IMPORTANT! TURN OFF YOUR POP-UP BLOCKER FOR WRITER'S HELP! To access the different readings and exercises, your instructor will provide you with a link. However, these links often lead to "pop-ups," meaning that they will create a new window when you click on them. In order to avoid spam, many people have "pop-up blockers" which will prevent these windows from opening.
Use this link to test whether your pop-up blocker will prevent the Writer's Help link from opening: Sample Writer's Help Exercise If the exercise pops open in a new window, your settings are fine. If you do not see the exercise, only the home page still, check your pop-up settings. You might see a little message near the toolbar that says "Pop-up blocked," or you can adjust your browser's tools/settings.
