0206 Day6: Coherence and Cohesion

Today we will:
1.)finish up the thesis statement exercise.
2.)wrap up on P-I-E structure by reading real paper articles.
3.)introduce coherence and cohesion (part I)
4.)finish the daily feedback.


Next time we will:
1.) continue with coherence and cohesion (part II)
2.) introduce academic style.



Assignment:  Due Feb. 13 R
1.) We have six topics in the diagnostic portfolio:
1-audience and purpose
2-thesis statements *recommended
3-P-I-E structure *highly highly highly recommended
4-coherence *highly highly highly highly recommended
5-academic style
6-punctuation

For your major assignment 1, you will need to talk about at least three of the six
topics from the above.Look through the questions provided and see if you have
a lot to reflect on for your diagnostic writing.


2.) If you'd like to reflect on this topic, answer each of the question below in a
word document. Upload the word file to your dropbox:

Module 4. Coherence Due Feb. 13 R

Option 1: Take the second body paragraph from your diagnostic essay and 
1) identify all cohesive devices (e.g. repetition, synonyms, pronouns, transition words)
in that paragraph,

2) add cohesive devices you can think of in order to make the paragraph more
cohesive, and/or

3) replace the existing cohesive device with a better one.
Write a brief paragraph describing the changes you made, why you made them, and
crucial points you will remember for future writing. 

Option 2: Select a body paragraph from your own diagnostic essay and analyze the paragraph for old/new information pattern. Then, try to write a diagnosis for what you think is wrong with the paragraph based on those patterns. Finally, write a revision of the paragraph.
